The Elite: Wicked

“Let us be glad” “that good will conquer good” in a world were the wicked exists. This movie, originating from the musical of Wicked, has been successfully directed and brought to us by Jon M. Chu. Galinda, the good witch is played by the one and only Ariana Grande. Just like our wicked witch, powerful in every way, is played by the great Cynthia Erivo.

The story starts with a question: “Are people born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?” Our protagonist, Elphaba is born green, and because of this she was discriminated upon for her entire life. With her “quirk” and color, she was not an ordinary human. For all except one, she was wicked.

Galinda is her name. She symbolized perfection, love, hope, and was a symbol of peace and friendship. But unlike all these, she “loathed” one woman above all, Elphaba. Galinda didn’t see her as everybody else, for she had seen from the begging that her skin mattered not, but what was inside Elphaba that could rival her. Elphaba’s ability in magic was more prominent than anyone else, more than Galinda herself. She loathed that the one person that was hated and discriminated by the entire school, is now an equal rival to her and now sleeps in her dorm!

Elphaba took sorcery classes, unlike Galinda because she was not powerful enough. Elphaba sees Galinda try very hard to be in the sorcery class too. Though Galinda doesn’t know it, Elphaba told the teacher of sorcery that she was going to drop out if she didn’t teach Galinda too; an action out of love. But Galinda, out of hate, gave her a supposed gift. An ugly hat that she was supposed to wear for the party. When the day comes of the great Ozdust ballroom event, the sorcery teacher gives Galinda a special gift, a wand. What Galinda was waiting for, was not given because of love of the person she hates, Elphaba.

But when Elphaba arrives with her ugly hat, she is not received with applause but laughs. Her first party with a gift she thought was out of love, now turned into a laugh about her. But she never let that ruin her first experience, and so even if the music stopped, and everyone was laughing, she danced. In that moment, Galinda feels true love and friendship from someone. A “true” person was in front of her, and she couldn’t let that go. The friendship now accepted and established came to be, and they danced like no one was watching. True love, “two good friends,” “too good friends” were born in the most special way.

The wizard, leader of the nation, now learned of Elphaba and her power and ends up inviting her to the emerald city. To “stand there with the wizard” was her way of “degreenifying” herself. It was her way of getting noticed and for once, not be hated but loved. But what expected her there was not what she thought.

The grimeree, a magical book in another language was prophesized to be read by a very powerull witch. Though she though that this was to be read by the wizard, who by position and collective knowledge is supposed to have power, turns out that couldn’t. He tricks her to read and create a powerful slave out of the palace guards. The spell tortured them and left them in pain. She figures out that he has “no real power,” and she tells him to “read it!” She understands now that his objective was never to help the people of oz, but to fit his own needs to keep his power.

She runs with Galinda, now Glinda, chasing her. Now that she knows the secret, and doesn’t agree with it, she is chased to the point of capture-kill. The final confrontation, the decision of paths between Glinda and Elphaba comes now. Glinda understood her, but was too tied to being one with the people, while Elphaba knew what was wrong and couldn’t bring herself to calm while torture was brought to citizens of oz because of a false leader.

“I hope your happy now,” “I hope your happy too,” were the words shared at last between the two friends. Elphaba knew that she could “have all she ever wanted” by staying, but that future, of lies, was not her future “anymore.” Something changed within her, and she was the truth. She finally saw that this world did not tie her down, that her green skin was with her to show her, that no one is tied to Oz, she is “unlimited” at last.

She accepted no limits, and she went for what she knew was right. But Glinda couldn’t go and could only leaver her with: -“I hope it brings you bliss,” “I hope your happy in end, my friend.”

Nothing could stop Elphaba now from “Defying gravity.” Her power soared and nobody in all of oz, no wizard that there is or was, was ever going to bring her down. In the final moments, were she faces herself as the last stop before greatness, she recognized that greatness was always with her. That this “wickedness” and power that was born with her, was how she would defy gravity, and she reach for that which trully great, her own liberty.

Truly, “Everyone deserves the chance to fly.”

Watch it now in Cinemas!!!

Don’t forget to live your life, and don’t let anyone block your way to greatness.
