The Elite: Gattaca

If I had to describe what terrible sadness I had to endure, watching this movie, I would never be able to scratch the surface. This is not a hero story, or one in which a person survives a terrible ordeal, it's something I believe to be even more horrible. It takes some insane deep thinkers to make this movie, and that is why I thank the director Andrew Niccol for making such a masterpiece. With the help of Ethan Hawke as Vincent and Jude Law as Jerome, I saw what is probably one of the most powerful dystopian movies to have ever been made.

If the past 300 years, and all its discrimination hasn’t been an example enough, this movie showed us the outcome of a very serious threat we will face in the near future. With science growing and getting ever closer to dominating our biology, the scientists of that era were able to determine the probability of having malicious and bad "qualities" in the baby you are going to conceive. They were able to master genes so much so that they could detect, control, erase, and change any genes that your child could have. The normal and natural way that had been used since the beginning of life were now useless and frowned upon as there was a new way, and a better way to get a "perfect baby."

But our protagonist's parents didn't follow the rules like that, and decided to have a natural birth which ended up being genetically read as a horrible candidate to life, and would only live up to his 30's. Now imagine this data being the detail and deciding point for everything you do in life. On every job interview, at every center, on every aspect of social life; your life was decided before you could even spell a word.

This was his life, but unlike every other discriminated person, he decided to trick the system and achieve what he was born to do. His dream, to go to space was at his sights. The problem was that only the most perfect, of perfect people were ever going to be able to go to where he wanted to go. Never would he have made it so far if it weren't for his choice to change.

Vincent decides to be Jerome, a professional swimmer, silver medal winner. He had an almost perfect genetic profile and was the key to Jerome's dream. His disability turned into what Jerome needed to be what he wanted to be, for Jerome became disabled in a horrible accident. This gave an opportunity for Vincent to change every single part of his appearance and fool the institution for years to be able to go to space.

The problem comes when he is chosen for a space mission that only happens every 70 years, and the director of the mission is murdered. Though he hides any trace of DNA very carefully, he left an eyelash and was discovered. His genetic profile was now known by the entire job center, but they never could recognize him because of the intense change in appearance. The point is that he was the suspect of a murder, and furthermore he was incredibly suspicious in everything that had to do with genetic screening.

His life's work, and his dream were at stake, and he was not about to give it all up. He played it very well too, but many things happened that made him doubt his drive. In his biggest moment, the point of no return, he gives out his identity to the doctor who has been screening him every day; only to find that he didn't care. In a way, I believe that he was given a gift. After so much work, effort and strife, how could his giver of life-God not give him what he worked for.

A genetically inferior, wrongly born, stupid, and probable of illness man was born into a world that didn't want him. His story reflects that of all those that are born with disadvantages. Things that make your 60+ year life a living hell. My heart goes out for all that had to endure life like this and kept on going. It's truly honorable to be such a person in a horrible society.

I implore that you watch it now on Prime video!!!! It will change your life!
