Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is probably one of the books that I have enjoyed reading the most. It raised my standards on what a great book is all about and essentially has become the book that I recommend the most.
Percy Jackson was a 12-year-old kid living in New York City who always found a way to get in trouble. He got expelled from different schools, as he always incited some sort of freak accident or some other form of mayhem.
In Percy's new school, he meets a kid named Grover, with whom he became friends. He usually defended Grover from school bullies. One day, while on a school field trip, Percy was attacked by one of his teachers that transformed into a flying monster. Mr. Brunner, one of the teachers, defended Percy. After defeating the monster, he took Percy back to his group, as if nothing had happened.
That same night, while Percy was sleeping, he woke up to voices talking in a nearby room. Out of curiosity, Percy followed the voices and found Grover and Mr. Brunner having a conversation. Percy noticed that Grover was no longer his normal self, as he had four legs and two tiny horns, like a goat. Seeing this, Percy let out a surprised gasp, alerting Grover and Mr. Brunner to his location.
The next morning, Grover took Percy to Camp Half-Blood. At this camp, Percy found out that he is a demigod and the son of Poseidon. He also met Annabeth, a demigod just like him. She helped him get settled in. They became best friends.
Word got out that Zeus, the most powerful of the twelve Olympian gods, had lost his weapon, Master Bolt. Zeus and Poseidon had been arguing because Zeus blamed Poseidon for stealing his weapon. Percy, along with Annabeth and Grover, was assigned to find and retrieve the Master Bolt.
After many life-threatening encounters, Percy and his friends entered the Underworld. They visited the Underworld Palace, Hade's home. There they talked to Hades, where they found out that, Ares the god of war, had Zeus’ Master Bolt. Percy and his team then left the Underworld to confront Ares.
When Percy confronted Ares and accused him of stealing the Master Bolt, a fight broke out. Whilst fighting, Percy cut Ares, leaving him surprised that a mortal could hurt him, the god of war. Ares got mad about this and left. After the fight, a bewildered Percy found the Master Bolt in his backpack… He then went to Olympus, home of the Gods, and returned the Master Bolt to Zeus.
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is one of the best books that I have ever read. Its fast-paced action and the interesting plot never failed to amaze me. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Greek Mythology and adventures. I give this book a 5/5 rating.
