Driver's License: A Historic Debut

Actualizado: 6 mar 2021

Olivia Rodrigo’s most recent single “Driver’s License” broke Spotify’s record for most streams of a song in a single week. The song was streamed 65.8 million times from January 7 to January 14. This led to the song debuting on Spotify’s Global Weekly Top 200 at the #1 spot, topping other hits such as DAKITI by Bad Bunny and Jhay Cortez, and “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd. “Driver’s License” also broke the record for most streams in a day for a non-holiday tune on January 11. The song then surpassed its own record on January 12. “Driver’s License” also broke the record for the biggest first-week streaming debut ever globally on Amazon Music following its release.

You may be wondering now who Olivia Rodrigo is, and how her song became so popular so quickly. Olivia Rodrigo, who was better known for her role in Disney Channel’s “High School Musical – The Musical: The Series” is an up-and-coming singer that needed to release a song that would break her out of her Disney shell while establishing herself as an independent artist. Rodrigo accomplished it by releasing her first single, “Driver’s License”, which stood out mainly with its simpler sound. Nowadays, we are used to artists using autotune and electronic beats in their songs, whereas “Driver’s License” was composed with a B major piano note, double kick drums, and claps. Rodrigo used little or almost no autotune and a simple yet very catchy hook, making “Driver’s License” a very unexpected hit. The song is about a recent heartbreak she had, adding an emotional power to the song.

Olivia Rodrigo has definitely caught the attention of the music industry with her new single, and I’m sure that many of us are excited to see what the up-and-coming artist is going to do next.
